- In a saucepan, combine the whole milk and granulated sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Simmer and Stir:
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring continuously to prevent the milk from scalding.
- Reduce and Thicken:
- Reduce the heat to low and continue simmering, allowing the mixture to reduce by about half. This process may take 45 minutes to an hour.
- Add Vanilla:
- Once the mixture has thickened, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let it cool to room temperature.
- Store or Use:
- Transfer the sweetened condensed milk to a jar or airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
